My First Moto Ride in Kigali

Motorcycle taxis, locally known as motos, are one of the most popular ways to get around Kigali. With thousands of these bikes navigating the city’s streets, they have become an essential part of everyday life. It is estimated that around 25,000 moto-taxis operate across the capital.

Safety is important, and drivers are required by law to provide passengers with a clean helmet. It is common to wear a thin headscarf or cap underneath when using a shared helmet β€” a practical little tip I quickly learned!

Kigali is also moving towards greener transportation, with electric motos becoming increasingly common. Battery-swapping stations across neighbourhoods such as Kimironko, Nyamirambo and Nyabugogo help keep these electric bikes on the road.

For me, however, the real adventure was much more personal: my first moto ride to work! I was a little anxious as I climbed onto the back of the motorcycle, not quite knowing what to expect. But once we were on our way, I began to relax, and before I knew it, we had arrived safely.

One more first to add to my Rwanda adventure! It may seem like a small thing, but living in a new country is full of these little moments that push you beyond your comfort zone and gradually make the unfamiliar feel familiar.
